Mosaic and artists: a fertile alliance, rich in ideas that frequently develop into true masterpieces by artists such as Gentilini (above) and Santomaso (left). Mosaic is kind to artists who are capable ofpene trating the medium to its core. It is not a matter of setting mosaic above painting, because in these instances mosaic is painting. Such results may only be achieved when the artist and the person who effectively carries out the mosaic enjoy a close rapport, sharing the same goals and the same feelings. The thousands of colours in the "library" can satisfy the requirements of the most demanding mosaicists. Nevertheless, it became necessary to establish a more limited colour range to be permanently on hand, in view of the constantly expanding mosaic tesserae market. With years of experience behind them, the Orsoni brothers have patiently and meticulously built up a basic sample collec¬tion, containing just over one hundred different shades, to meet the demands of a wide variety of clients. Nowadays, a great many mosaicists use only the basic colours from Orsonis sample collection, which is reproduced on the following pages.
