Смальта Orsoni
From the mysterious fascination of Bangkok to avant-garde modern Western architecture: the great Bassin de la Defence in Paris, where mosaic is used in an ex¬tremely up-to-date and constantly surprising key. Orsoni mosaic colours 'were chosen for a design by the famous painter Agam. They cover the bottom of the largepool and follow the course of the cascades in what is an almost musical composition of different coloured notes: an intriguing combination of water, light and colour.
For a century now, Paris has favoured the гюогк of Orsoni, which embellishes, amongst other buildings, the Opera House, the Trocadero, the Hotel de la Ville, the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Sacre Coeur Cathedral. Mosaic, stone and steel are the three materials making up a sculpture by Heinz Mack that dominates the entrace of the huge IBM Centre in Stuttgart (photo above). The brilliance and lightness of the white gold tesserae at the base form a striking con¬trast with the weight of the large blocks above, and yet the work is a perfectly balanced whole. The large fountain belonging to the Dresdner Bank in Frankfurt (photo on the right) is also the work of Heinz Mack. The imposing background appropriately blends with the mosaic base, sparkling brilliantly beneath the veil of water which covers its surface.
AIthough mosaic is used for increasingly avant-garde projects, its great figurative tradition is never swept aside. The picture above showes the synagogue in Essen, which has a very interesting history. Designed during the Art Nouveau period, when mosaic was enjoying a great revival, it was seriously damaged during the war and subsequently rebuilt with identical material and in exactly the same style, proving that mosaic is immune to the deterioration caused by the passing of time.
Even the oldest mosaics can be accurately restored and remain completely true to the originals. To the right, and to the right - hand page, one of the most important works to which the Orsoni family has contributed: the great Banqueting Room in Stockholm City Hall. Each year a vast reception is offered by the Swedish authorities to celebrate the Nobel Prize, taking place in magnificent surroundings in which a Byzantine-style mosaic decoration covers a surface of thou¬sands of metres.
