Смальта Orsoni
One of the most remarkable pieces of modern archi¬tecture, Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, owes the mosaic decorations embellishing its spires to the Orsoni family. Painted ceramics were used for Gaudi's original decorations, but proved to have a number of disadvan-tages, including the inevitable deterioration of the paint Following his crucial meeting with Angelo Orsoni, the great artist replaced the ceramics with mosaics. Ever since then, four genera¬tions of Orsonis have produced the enamels for this monumental church, work on which is in progress to this very day.
One normally associates mosaic with the decoration of monuments or as one of the chief mediums of expression in religious and ceremonial art. The examples shown on these pages, bearing the highly individual hallmark of Lucio Orsoni, offerample demonstration that mosaic decoration can be a key element in modern interior design.
A truly adaptable, versatile material, mosaic is an ideal medium with which to can*y out the most advanced designs. It can turn the most commonplace household area - such as the wall of a bath¬room - into a thing of beauty. When architecture does not compro¬mise decoration - a question of balance that is neither simple nor should be taken for granted - and when the "container" allows the mosaicist to freely use his imagination, the most astonishing results may ensue.

In Thailand, an enchanting country that of¬fers broad scope for the imagination, thou¬sands of square metres glitter with the (Jrsoni brothers' mosaic qold, used to cover monumental statues of Buddha and the spectacular domes of the temples in a lavish carpet of gilded enamel that defies time and the elements. On the right hand page is the most recent commission, received from Her Royal Highness the Princess Maha Chakn, who visited the old factory in Venice to order the mosaics in person.
