Смальта Orsoni
Over the centuries the mosaic-making technique has undergone only one radical innovation. This occur¬red when the old method of applying the tesserae directly onto the wall - where a "sinopite" or prepara¬tory drawing had previously been traced out - was superceded by a new technique whereby the tesserae are laid upside down on a paper support which is removed when the decoration is transferred to the wall.
The intricacies of mosaic decoration, which can be likened to the complex woven patterns in tapestries and fabrics, make this an eternally fascinating medium. Huge surfaces are covered ivith often microscopically small fragments of glass, cut and chipped by mosaicists with endless patience, using a technique that can only be acquired through years of practice and undying enthusiasm.
Decorators must be able to meet the most difficult challenges for, through the juxtaposition of colours and glass fragments, they are required to suggest the soft curves, volume and transparency of even the most delicate draperies
