Смальта Orsoni
The efforts of the master glassmaker are amply rewarded by the rich artistic and aesthetic qualities a skilled mosaicist can achieve in a decoration. Throughout the history of art, mosaic has provided a truly fascinating medium.
Mosaic was in use in ancient times, reaching its zenith in the celebrated roman decorations, and flourishing in Early Christian and Byzantine art. Some magnificent works were carried out in the splendid mosaics in the church of Daphnis near Athens, the Martorana in Palermo and the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice. Mosaic returned to the fore during the Renais¬sance in some of the most important commissions of the age, and was revived in the nineteenth century for decorating domes, apses and walls with designs drawing on Early Christian and Byzan¬tine styles.
During the Art Nouveau period, mosaic was favoured for its decorative and stylized qualities, as exemplified by Klimtfs magnificent mosaics. The history of mosaic is unending, for even today it can be used to create greatly innovative, rigorous aesthetic and artistic values
