Смальта Orsoni
All of nature is contained within the priceless volumes of this silica library; the breathtaking collection in itself comprises a potential painting that is just waiting for the hand of the artist to rearrange and match the colours.
It is difficult to find one's bearings and to recognize any special order in the way the little glass slabs are arranged. Sometimes it appears accidental, sometimes it seems to be dictat¬ed by pure, aesthetic criteria (but who knows if that is really the case?), sometimes devised simply to astound, as in the corner at the far end of the room, where a spectacular panel of colour rises from the floor to the beams of the ceiling, starting with white (and how many different whites there are!), turning gradually into violet, crossing the whole spectrum of pinks and lilacs en route. As we mentioned at the start of our "tour", mosaics are necessarily made from a vast selection of colours because, whereas in paint¬ings colours can be mixed with each other, here they are placed side by side. Is mosaic, then, a more "limited" art form than painting?
Leaving the Orsoni's library, still quite dazed from the experience, one actually has the opposite impression that mosaic offers boundless possibilities for expression.
