Смальта Orsoni
An entire chapter could be written about mosaic gold: from the splendours of Byzantine icons to the spectacular, mystical Buddhist temples, over the centuries mosaic gold has virtually become a symbol of the mosaic itself - and, indeed, has sometimes been regarded as the mosaic par excellence. But how is mosaic gold made?
First and foremost, it is real, 2-carat gold. It has to be the purest gold to withstand a firing and beating process that obtains incredible results: from just one cubic centimetre of gold, more than six square metres of beaten gold may be produced, in a layer so fine that it is scarcely perceptible to the human eye. The gold leaf is then sandwiched between a transparent glass base - the colour of which may range from green to aquamarine - and a fine, neutral glass panel that protects the surface. The three elements, heated once again, are welded into a single block that is free of cracks even in the most minute fragments. It would be interesting to make a thorough study of the pressure coefficients of glass and gold - another well-kept Orsoni secret.
