Смальта Orsoni
The truly magical moment occurs when colour is created. This stage is known by master mosaicists as “tirare al colore” (drawing out the colour") and it is without a doubt the most difficult and delicate stage of the entire operation. If we consider that thousands of different colours can be obtained from just a few dozen oxides, it can be fully appreciated why this is such a deeply fascinating material to work with.
The dividing line between craftsman and artist is so slim that it almost vanishes altogether: with endless patience, skilled hands and eyes choose nuances and shades between which the layman can scarcely detect any difference.
Needless to say, as with all other types of art, some jealously guarded secrets are kept. It is known, for instance, that many centuries ago some shades of red were obtained by mixing burnt coal cinders with the glass paste; it was discovered that blue tones should be made starting from the darkest hue and ending with the lightest, whilst the reverse applies to pink. But the deepest secrets are the family recipes, known as "anime" (spirits). An ordinary green, quite commonplace when made using traditional methods, acquires a tone and intensity that can only be obtained with the addition of a homemade "anima", following dosages and procedures handed down by four genera¬tions of Orsonis
