Some materials are made from earth, others acquire form through their contact with water.
Mosaic is created from fire. As with metals and crystal, mosaic starts its life through fusion. That is why we have chosen the brightly coloured stack of melting pots which greets visitors at the entrance to the furnace as our symbol and as an introduction to our short voyage of discovery of the techniques used in producing glass for mosaic. The raw materials are fused together in the melting pot, a humble, patient recipient that can support a temperature of over 1,300 degrees in the furnace, forming the opaque white paste that is the basis of the product.
